How to use the Instagram character counter
This Instagram character counter checks text as you type or paste it. Choose Caption, Bio, Username or another field and the tool compares your text with that field’s limit while also showing the remaining character budget.

Instagram caption character counter
Meta’s content-publishing documentation specifies a maximum caption length of 2,200 characters. It also documents a maximum of 30 hashtags and 20 @ tags for published captions. The counter warns when those totals are exceeded.
The feed does not necessarily show an entire long caption immediately. Current tools and publishing guides commonly use roughly 125 characters as an approximate point before a “more” expansion, although the visible cutoff can vary by layout. Hashtag and mention counter for Instagram
Hashtags and mentions use part of your caption space. This tool detects hashtag tokens beginning with # and mentions beginning with @. For Meta’s content-publishing API, a caption can include a maximum of 30 hashtags and 20 @ tags, so the alerts make those totals easy to see.
Do emojis count as Instagram characters?
Emoji counting can be technically complicated because one visible emoji may contain multiple Unicode code points or UTF-16 units. The main result uses visible grapheme characters where the browser supports them, and the Technical Character Counts section shows alternative totals for edge cases.

The main character count includes spaces, punctuation and line breaks. A separate “No spaces” statistic is included for comparison, but you should use the main count when checking an Instagram field limit.
Useful ways to stay within the limit
- Put the most important caption idea near the beginning.
- Remove repeated spaces and unnecessary line breaks before publishing.
- Watch hashtags and mentions because they use caption space too.
- Use Trim to Limit as a starting point, then reread the ending for clarity.
- Leave a little room when a draft contains complex or combined emoji.
